With ingredients that are the freshest available, seasonally selected, cooked to perfection and artistically presented by a talented staff led by Executive Chef Josh Thomsen, there is little wonder why guests return for all occasions or no occasion at all.
In order to serve the very best, the chefs make frequent trips to local farmers markets for inspiration. Immerse yourself in an atmosphere filled with live music, impeccable service and attention to detail. Indulge your senses with ever changing menus created to accentuate seasonal dishes, while feasting your eyes on spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay and skyline. Choose from either the new signature restaurant, Meritage at the Claremont, or the ultra-hip oasis, Paragon Bar & Café. And if you are poolside, the The Bayview Café, offers salads, sandwiches, hamburgers and other snack favorites.
The Meritage is a wine-driven concept which creatively pairs the flavor profiles of distinctive American wines with full and half portions of regionally sourced, farm fresh food. A new upscale yet comfortable lounge complements a spacious dining room offering the Claremont’s legendary panoramic views. Executive Chef, Josh Thomsen, has worked at some of the finest restaurants and hotels across the country including the French Laundry in Napa Valley; and at the Little Nell Hotel in Colorado and the Hotel Bel Air in Los Angeles, both Relais Chateau properties.
Meritage celebrates the marriage of wine and food by offering contemporary Californian cuisine with an extensive selection of wines available by the taste, glass and bottle in a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere for the grandest of fetes or the most casual of dinners.
Offering contemporary California cuisine that reflects the locale and an updated interpretation of fine dining in the historic venue, Meritage relies heavily on the local farmers and purveyors to shape its menu and dishes are featured with suggested wine pairings divided into two sections, a white page and a red page. In addition, Chef Thomsen offers a unique “Vineyard to Table” prix fixe menu featuring produce, herbs, meat, poultry, olive oil, cheese and other ingredients sourced directly from Napa and Sonoma wineries. While the approachable wine list features varietals from around the globe, the main focus is on local wine - from those in Napa Valley to little known wineries in Santa Cruz and Livermore, California.
Meritage relies heavily on the local farmers and purveyors to shape its menu as well as the culinary expertise of Executive Chef Josh Thomsen to create dishes that are exciting and satisfying. His extensive experience and passion for local fare is showcased throughout Meritage’s breakfast, dinner and bar menus which offer small and large portions encouraging diners to explore and share. For Thomsen, “It is about letting the ingredients shine on the menu creating a sense of freshness and seasonality that makes every meal at Meritage unique.”
Dinner highlights include Castroville Artichoke Soup with crispy prosciutto and roasted tomatoes on the light white wine category, the Cider Braised Kurobuta Pork Belly with Brussels sprouts, black-eyed peas and pickled onion on the spicy, earthy, red wine category and the Northern California Lamb Loin with chickpea fries, slow roasted ratatouille and basil infused olive oil on the robust red wine category. Indulgent desserts include the “Pier 17” chocolate tasting, the Frog Hollow Farm’s Market tart tartin and a tasting trio of local artisan cheeses.
The “Sips & Bites” bar menu features playful and comforting dishes like Kobe Beef Mini Burgers with all the fixings on a toasted sesame seed bun and Mini Bay Shrimp Tacos with “Old Bay” aioli. Breakfast specialties include Lemon Soufflé Pancakes with Watsonville raspberries and Vermont maple syrup; Tahitian Vanilla Bean Brioche French Toast with orange butter and passion fruit syrup and “Salmon & Eggs” (smoked salmon-Yukon gold potato hash), two farm fresh eggs and hollandaise. On Saturday, an a la carte Brunch Menu is served and in the tradition of the Claremont, a Sunday brunch buffet is also offered at Meritage inviting guests to spend the day enjoying great food with family and friends in a fantastic setting.

This is an integral part of the dining experience at Meritage at the Claremont.Meritage offers guests a small and large plate menu using the highest quality ingredients from many local purveyors and artisanal producers from around the United States. With over 190 selections to choose from our wine list complements the food with a substantial backbone of the highest quality American wine producers without excluding a representation of classic and new European producers, including Italy, Austria, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany. This list received the coveted Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for 9 years running.
There is a list of 18-featured wines by the glass offers a selection of wines that change to accommodate our seasonal menu changes. The menu is laid out like a wine list and is designed to pair with specific wine flavors. There are 6 categories of wine styles on the menu, each with 3 dishes. These are the chef’s recommendations of what goes well with a particular style of wine. All glasses are available in half and full pours to give our guests flexibility to try a variety of wines with their meals.
At a time when the selection of wine can be daunting and intimidating due to the sheer quantity of extraordinary wine available, our list offers novices and wine connoisseurs a perfect blend of wine and food. There are wines for every taste and price point. Paragon Bar and Café is a lively, casual dining spot with some of the Bay Area's best views, featuring American brasserie-style cuisine by Chef Charles Crossley, including a large selection of hand-shaken cocktails, outdoor deck seating with bay views, and live jazz four nights a week. Chef Crossley creates contemporary favorites using only the freshest local ingredients prepared in a simple, unpretentious manner. It is open for lunch or dinner seven days a week. A late night menu is offered until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. One of the top restaurants in Berkeley, Paragon creates the perfect dining destination.
